Which scooter should you rent in Lombok?
Short answer: a Honda Vario 125 for most travellers, a 110cc scooter if you ride solo around Kuta, and a Yamaha NMAX 155 or Honda PCX 160 if you plan long trips across the island. Only take the manual Honda CRF 150L if you are an experienced rider heading off-road.
We rent all of these bikes from our family shop in Kuta Lombok and see every season which choices work and which ones travellers regret. Here is how to pick.
The right scooter for your trip
First time on a scooter
Our pick: Honda Vario 110cc (75.000 IDR/day) or Honda BeAT Street 110cc (75.000 IDR/day)
Light, low and fully automatic. Easy to push, easy to park and forgiving at low speed – the right bike to learn on in the quiet streets of Kuta.
Short rides around Kuta and the nearby beaches
Our pick: Honda Scoopy 110cc (90.000 IDR/day) or Honda Vario 110cc (75.000 IDR/day)
Tanjung Aan, Seger, Mandalika and Gerupuk are all within 20 minutes on flat, sealed roads. A 110cc does this comfortably and costs the least.
Two people on one scooter
Our pick: Honda Vario 125cc (90.000 IDR/day)
The smallest engine we recommend for riding two-up on the coastal hills west of Kuta. Two riders on a 110cc feel slow on the climbs to Mawun and Selong Belanak.
Long day trips across the island
Our pick: Yamaha NMAX 155cc (150.000 IDR/day) or Honda PCX 160cc (150.000 IDR/day)
Bigger wheels, a longer seat and liquid-cooled engines that hold speed on the main roads to Senggigi, Bangsal harbour for the Gili Islands or the Rinjani foothills.
Broken roads and gravel
Our pick: Honda ADV 160cc (175.000 IDR/day)
Still an automatic, but with long-travel suspension and more ground clearance for the rough patches towards Ekas and the rainy-season potholes.
Real dirt tracks, experienced riders only
Our pick: Honda CRF 150L (185.000 IDR/day)
A manual trail bike with off-road tyres. Only worth it if you can ride a clutch and plan the tracks east of Gerupuk – everywhere else a scooter is easier.

Four questions that decide it
1. Will you ride alone or two-up?
This matters more than anything else. Solo, a 110cc scooter is enough for the whole south coast. With a passenger, the hills between Kuta, Mawun and Selong Belanak demand at least the Vario 125 – otherwise you will crawl up every climb.
2. How far will you go?
If your trips stay within 20 minutes of Kuta, save the money and take a small scooter. If you want to ride to Senggigi, Bangsal harbour or the waterfalls in the north, the bigger NMAX and PCX are worth every rupiah in comfort. See our six routes from Kuta for distances.
3. How much riding experience do you have?
Bigger scooters are heavier at walking pace and when parking in sand. If this is your first time, start on a 110cc for a day or two – you can swap to a bigger bike later with one WhatsApp message.
4. Are you carrying a surfboard?
Every bike gets a free side surf rack. A board adds wind resistance, so for the longer runs west of Kuta pick a 125cc or bigger. Our surf spot guide lists the distances.

Choosing a scooter in Lombok – FAQ
For most travellers staying in Kuta Lombok the Honda Vario 125 is the best all-round choice: automatic, strong enough for two people and the coastal hills, and only IDR 90.000 per day. Beginners riding solo around Kuta are fine on a 110cc, and long distances across the island are more comfortable on a Yamaha NMAX 155 or Honda PCX 160.
Yes, for one rider around Kuta and the nearby beaches. A 110cc handles Tanjung Aan, Mandalika, Seger and Gerupuk without effort. It struggles with two people on the hills west of Kuta and on long trips to the north of the island, where a 125cc or 155cc scooter is the better choice.
Both cost IDR 150.000 per day at BADY and both are excellent for long rides. The NMAX 155 feels a little sportier and has a very roomy under-seat compartment. The PCX 160 has the softer, longer seat and is the more relaxed bike for two-up touring and long stays. Pick the one that is free on your dates – you will not be disappointed by either.
Automatic, unless you are an experienced motorcycle rider heading for dirt tracks. Seven of the eight bikes in our Kuta fleet are fully automatic. The Honda CRF 150L is the only manual bike and we rent it only to riders who are comfortable with a clutch and off-road riding.
Any scooter in our fleet takes a free side surf rack. For the short runs to Gerupuk, Seger and Tanjung Aan a Honda Vario 110 or Scoopy is enough. If you surf Selong Belanak, Mawi or Are Guling west of Kuta, or ride with a longboard, the extra power of the Vario 125 or NMAX 155 makes the hills noticeably easier.
It can. Some travel insurance policies limit cover to scooters up to 125cc, and most require a valid motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit. Check your policy before you choose a 155cc or 160cc scooter.
